5 Reasons Cloud is Not the Change Many Think

Cloud computing is a hot topic, and it will only get more attention. Windows 8 is about to be released as the first system that truly integrates web-based applications into the operating system and not just the browser of your system. Apple released iCloud. Windows 8 will be the first operating system that can work on any device. There is talk of new products, Windows 8 gadgets and a range of devices that will access the internet to operate that we did not have before. Amazon, Google (Chrome books are on the street), and other companies are all racing to provide cloud computing solutions. Cloud computing is on the way. The fear for our security and privacy as consumers and individuals is also growing each day. Are those fears really founded in truth, or is it just a fear of change? Security and privacy are essential to our lives. This is a look at some of the main issues related.

  • We are already using the cloud. We are already using functions of cloud computing, it is just that many people don’t realise it. Do you use hotmail, Gmail or another web-based email service? Many companies are already using servers that supply applications and data to user terminals. Facebook is the perfect example to demonstrate 600 million people are using a cloud-based technology to store and communicate information.
  • Internet access. The ability to connect to the internet will be very important. It will probably be more important than other fears, such as, not having our service provider operational, or not having access to our data. If you can’t get online, you can’t access your data. It is the first step of access to anything. A computer or device that cannot connect the internet is already limited in function.
  • Security. If your computer or any other device can is online, you have security concerns. It is possible to penetrate your machine and data. A provider that provides the location for your data-storage is probably more secure. In that sense, our security issues are the same, except, we have control over our data and physical machine. At the same time, our banking is already online and that is one of the most important aspects of everyone’s life. Your ultimate protection will be a good password and careful attention to keeping elements of your life secret. Even Sony’s PlayStation database has been hacked.
  • Costs. There are a lot of potential costs associated with internet access. If that access need is increased, there is potential for our costs to increase. It is normal for someone to pay a high price in Australia to only have 10G of internet access capability per month. That might have seemed a lot a few years ago, but is not much already in 2011, and as we move to more cloud-based computing, we will need many times more. Mobile phone data access is still costly in anyone’s language.
  • Device.Cloud computing will mean there will be many devices accessing the internet that did not. Even the simplest of devices, such as your fridge, will probably access the internet. The requirements of the physical device to do this will be less. It is not like a fridge will have to be a computer with a lot of information stored on it. It will just require some common hardware. Cloud computing will usher in a world of newer devices and inventions. Our current devices, such as desktops and laptops, will be replaced by a whole new technology step. We already see this taking place, cloud will just speed that process up.

Windows 8 is a very clear signal the world of computing is headed to full-blown cloud computing in a very short time. Apple’s iCloud is a step in the direction, but Microsoft is about to deliver a quantum leap forward. There is no stopping this trend. We can only adapt and protect ourselves as this change comes on. We are already standing in it.
